I stand in gratitude as our country mourns the passing of the son of our nation to Sir Lester Bryant Bird.

LB, as I affectionately called him, was a statesman, mentor, visionary, exceptional orator and the best economic development political science masterclass instructor any student could ask for. His legacy will live on not only through his transformational policies that created a better twin-island nation and region, but in the lives, he’s shaped, including my own.

My profound sympathies, prayers and love to his family.

SIP, comrade LB.

The staff of the Consulate General of Antigua and Barbuda in Toronto, join me in extending deepest condolences to the Bird family and to all Antiguans and Barbudans on the passing of former Prime Minister and National Hero, Sir Lester Bird.

Sir Lester was deeply committed to the socio-economic development of Antigua and Barbuda and served in the Government for over four decades. He was also an unapologetic champion for regional integration. At the CARICOM level, it was under his chairmanship that the Regional Negotiating Machinery (CRNM), now the Office of Trade Negotiations, was created and the first Protocols of the Revised Treaty of Chagaramus and the Charter of Civil Society were signed. At the level of the OECS, Sir Lester had the distinction of being the first Chairman of the OECS in 1982. He served as Chairman a second time in 1989.

As an avid sportsman, Sir Lester won a bronze medal for the West Indies in the 1957 Pan Am games. His strong support of West Indies Cricket was also well known across the Caribbean.

Antigua and Barbuda has lost a great son and the Caribbean has lost one of its champions.

Rest in Peace.

Ann-Marie Layne
