The Consul General of Antigua and Barbuda in Toronto was honoured to represent Antigua and Barbuda alongside fellow members of the Caribbean Consular Corps at the CIMA Mayor’s Trophy, a tournament that celebrates cricket’s rich heritage while fostering community engagement and cultural exchange across the Greater Toronto Area.

Addressing those in attendance, the Consul General reflected on cricket’s profound significance throughout the Caribbean, describing it as far more than a sport.

“For us in the Caribbean, cricket is part of our identity. It has united generations, inspired excellence, and brought our people together across islands and around the world.”

The remarks paid tribute to some of the region’s greatest cricketing icons, including Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Lance Gibbs, and Antigua and Barbuda’s own Sir Vivian Richards, whose remarkable achievements continue to inspire Caribbean people at home and throughout the diaspora.

The Consul General also praised the CIMA Mayor’s Trophy for demonstrating the power of sport to build bridges between cultures and strengthen communities. By bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds and introducing young people to the game, the tournament promotes friendship, teamwork, and mutual understanding while celebrating the multicultural spirit that defines Toronto.
